Breathing test may prevent unnecessary ICU tube reinsertions

NCT ID NCT07467265

First seen Mar 14, 2026 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a quick breathing measurement called the Rapid Shallow Breathing Index (RSBI) can accurately predict when a patient in the intensive care unit (ICU) is ready to have their breathing tube removed. Researchers will measure RSBI in 70 adult patients who are already considered ready for tube removal, then track whether they need the tube reinserted within 48 hours. The goal is to find a reliable way to reduce complications from prolonged ventilation.
