Could a Two-Dose immune drug combo help stubborn lung disease?
NCT ID NCT02990286
First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 36 times
Summary
This completed Phase 3 trial tested whether adding two infusions of rituximab to standard mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) therapy improves lung function in 122 adults with interstitial lung disease (ILD) who did not respond to initial treatment. The main goal was to measure changes in forced vital capacity (FVC) after six months. The study also tracked progression-free survival and safety. Results will show if this combination offers a meaningful advantage over MMF alone.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
rituximab (a drug that targets certain immune cells) given as two intravenous infusions two weeks apart, plus mycophenolate mofetil (an immunosuppressant)
What this could lead to
If successful, this combination could offer a new treatment option for people with interstitial lung disease whose lung function continues to decline despite standard therapy.
What could go wrong
This is a completed Phase 3 trial with 122 participants, so results are more reliable than early-phase studies. However, rituximab can increase infection risk, and the benefit may not apply to all types of ILD.
