Memory boost? study tests 'Test Yourself' method in schizophrenia

NCT ID NCT02150174

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 33 times

Summary

This study looked at whether a memory technique called 'retrieval practice' works in people with schizophrenia. Participants studied word pairs and were later tested or re-studied them. The goal was to see if testing improves recall more than re-studying. 40 people took part, including healthy controls, to compare results.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If effective, this method could be used in cognitive remediation programs to help people with schizophrenia improve their memory.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early exploratory study with only 40 participants. It does not test a treatment, only a learning technique, so results may not lead to practical benefits.
