Could a common numbing drug replace opioids for kidney stone pain?
NCT ID NCT07536594
First seen May 01, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 3 times
Summary
This study compares two pain relievers—lidocaine (a numbing medicine) and morphine (an opioid)—for people with severe kidney stone pain in the emergency department. Researchers want to see if lidocaine can provide similar pain relief without the risks of opioids. About 250 adults with suspected kidney stones will receive one of the two drugs, and their pain levels will be measured over 90 minutes.
