Could a simple enema save tiny babies from deadly gut disease?
NCT ID NCT03631979
First seen May 04, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 7 times
Summary
This study looked at whether giving extremely preterm infants (born before 27 weeks) regular saline enemas helps them reach full feeding sooner and prevents necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a severe gut condition. The trial planned to include 200 babies, half receiving the enemas and half standard care. The study was terminated early, so results are limited.
