Saline enemas tested to prevent deadly gut disease in tiniest babies

NCT ID NCT03631979

First seen May 04, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study looked at whether giving extremely preterm infants (born before 27 weeks) regular saline enemas could help them reach full feeding sooner and prevent necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a severe gut condition. The trial planned to include 200 babies, with half receiving the enemas and half getting standard care. The study was terminated early, so results are limited.
