Machine learning may forecast brain decline after head injury
NCT ID NCT05084352
First seen Sep 04, 2026 · Last updated Sep 04, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a computer algorithm can predict neurological decline in people who arrive at the hospital within 6 hours of a traumatic brain injury. Researchers will collect vital sign data and use machine learning to see if it can forecast worsening brain function, such as a drop in consciousness or the need for emergency intervention. The study includes 1,200 adults with traumatic brain injury. If successful, this approach could help doctors act faster to prevent further damage.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Predictive algorithm using vital sign data and machine learning
- What this could lead to
- If the algorithm works, doctors could use it to spot early signs of worsening brain injury and intervene sooner, potentially saving lives and reducing long-term damage.
- What could go wrong
- The algorithm is still being tested for accuracy. It may not work reliably across all patients, and the study does not test a treatment, so it will not directly change outcomes.

Inclusion Criteria: * Arrival to the hospital within 6 hours of injury * Age \>= 18 years old * Patients with traumatic brain injury(TBI). TBI is defined as any alteration or loss of consciousness with or without positive head C.T findings. Exclusion Criteria: * Deemed to have a non-survivable TBI * Brain dead on arrival * Active substance abuse for opiates and cocaine as noted by admission toxicology screen. * Any thoracic or abdominal injury resulting in open surgical intervention * Pregnancy * Prisoners * Active military * Non - English speaking (due to necessity for consent in aims 2 and 3) * Age \> 89 years
