Chatbot vs. standard app: which helps smokers quit best?

NCT ID NCT04308759

First seen May 25, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026

Summary

This study tested two online programs to help people stop smoking. Over 1,600 adult smokers who wanted to quit were randomly assigned to use either a conversational chatbot (QuitBot) or a standard text-messaging program. The main goal was to see how many people had not smoked for at least 30 days after 12 months. The results help show whether a chatbot can be more effective than existing digital tools for smoking cessation.
