New heart zapping technique could change AFib treatment forever

NCT ID NCT07601763

First seen May 22, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new way to treat atrial fibrillation (AFib), a common heart rhythm problem that raises stroke risk. The new method, called pulsed field ablation, uses short electrical pulses to destroy only the faulty heart cells while sparing nearby tissues like the esophagus. About 1,574 adults with AFib who have not had this procedure before will be randomly assigned to either the new pulsed field ablation or standard radiofrequency ablation. The main goal is to see if the new method is better at preventing AFib from coming back within a year.
