Food plus therapy: new study targets trauma and hunger in youth
NCT ID NCT07427524
First seen Mar 03, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 22 times
Summary
This study looks at whether giving both food assistance and psychological counseling helps young adults aged 18-25 who face food insecurity and mental health issues. Participants will receive weekly food aid for a year, and half will also get twice-monthly therapy for six months. Researchers will track changes in food security and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma to see if the combined approach works better than food aid alone.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Food assistance and psychological follow-up
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that combining food aid with therapy helps reduce both food insecurity and psychological distress in vulnerable young people.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 70 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The interventions are supportive, not curative, and benefits may be modest.
