Summary

This early-phase study is testing whether adding two doses of psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) with counseling is safe for adults with opioid use disorder who are already taking buprenorphine/naloxone (a standard medication). The study will monitor side effects, withdrawal symptoms, and changes in opioid cravings. Only 10 people will participate, so results are very preliminary.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) given with counseling

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a way to reduce opioid cravings and improve quality of life for people already on medication for opioid use disorder.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small phase 1 study with only 10 people, so results may not apply widely. Psilocybin can cause intense psychological effects and is not yet proven safe or effective for this condition.
