Magic mushroom compound may spark brain cell growth in memory loss patients

NCT ID NCT06041152

First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 11 times

Summary

This small study tests whether psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, can increase the number of connections between brain cells in people with mild memory problems. Ten participants (six with amnestic mild cognitive impairment and four healthy volunteers) will receive either two doses of psilocybin or a placebo, then undergo brain scans and memory tests. The goal is to see if psilocybin boosts synaptic density and whether that leads to better thinking and memory.
