Summary
This study looked at whether a blood test for a marker called procalcitonin (PCT) can help doctors quickly figure out what type of bacteria is causing a severe bloodstream infection in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Researchers studied over 1,500 adult ICU patients who had a confirmed infection in their blood. The goal was to see if PCT levels could distinguish between different types of bacteria, which could help guide faster, more precise antibiotic treatment.
