Probiotics show promise for preterm infant health

NCT ID NCT07296718

First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 19 times

Summary

This study tested whether giving probiotics (good bacteria) to preterm babies for 28 days after birth can reduce serious health problems like gut infection (necrotizing enterocolitis) and sepsis, and improve feeding and growth. A total of 249 preterm infants weighing less than 2500 grams took part. The researchers compared single-strain versus multi-strain probiotics to see which worked better.
