Could probiotics soothe gut troubles in kids with autism?

NCT ID NCT06352203

First seen Mar 06, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This study tests whether a daily probiotic supplement for 6 months can improve the balance of gut bacteria in children aged 3-7 who have neurodevelopmental disorders like autism and also suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms such as constipation or bloating. Sixty children will be randomly assigned to receive either the probiotic or a placebo, and researchers will check if more kids in the probiotic group have a healthier gut microbiome after treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

probiotic supplement

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple dietary supplement to help manage gut symptoms in children with autism and similar conditions.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study with only 60 children, so results may not apply broadly. Probiotics are generally safe but may not change gut bacteria or symptoms as hoped.
