Probiotic shows promise in slowing type 1 diabetes progression

NCT ID NCT04335656

First seen Mar 25, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study tests whether a probiotic called Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v can reduce inflammation and help preserve the body's ability to produce insulin in people recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. About 60 participants aged 3 to 45 will receive either the probiotic or a placebo for 6 months. The goal is to see if changing gut bacteria can slow the loss of beta cell function and improve long-term disease control.
