New hope for stroke prevention in patients who Can't take blood thinners

NCT ID NCT03111654

First seen Nov 19, 2025 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 23 times

Summary

This study looked at a procedure to close a small pouch in the heart (the left atrial appendage) in 58 people with an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) who had previously had a brain bleed. Because blood thinners, the usual treatment to prevent strokes, are too risky for these patients, the procedure aims to block the area where most stroke-causing clots form. The goal was to see if this approach could safely reduce the risk of future strokes, bleeding, and death.
