First seen Feb 02, 2026 · Last updated May 20, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This study tests whether closing the left atrial appendage (a small pouch in the heart) during valve surgery can reduce the risk of silent brain injury in patients who do not have atrial fibrillation. About 100 adults undergoing open heart valve surgery will be enrolled. The main goal is to see if this extra step lowers the chance of small, unnoticed brain damage detected by MRI after surgery.
