Heart surgery breakthrough: pacing test may stop dangerous Post-Op rhythm disorder

NCT ID NCT03868150

First seen Feb 21, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study looks at 600 people having their first heart surgery. Doctors will use a short pacing test during the operation to see who is likely to develop atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) after surgery. Those found at risk will be randomly assigned to receive the drug amiodarone or standard care. The goal is to see if this test and targeted treatment can reduce post-surgery heart rhythm problems, shorten hospital stays, and lower the risk of stroke.
