Simple breathing tool may stop pneumonia in hip fracture patients

NCT ID NCT07189260

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 21, 2026 · Updated 26 times

Summary

This study tests whether using a positive expiratory pressure (PEP) device before and after hip fracture surgery can prevent hospital-acquired pneumonia. About 566 adults with hip fractures who are mentally able to consent will either receive PEP therapy plus standard care or standard care alone. Researchers will track pneumonia cases, 30-day deaths, and readmissions to see if the breathing exercises help.
