Blood filtering with light may stop transplant rejection
NCT ID NCT03204721
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 18 times
Summary
This study tested whether a procedure called extracorporeal photophoresis (ECP) — where a patient's blood is treated with light outside the body — could prevent graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in 158 people receiving stem cell transplants for blood cancers. GVHD is a serious complication where donor cells attack the patient's body. The goal was to see if preventive ECP could reduce GVHD and improve survival in the first year after transplant.
