Probiotic breakthrough: new study aims to stop recurrent vaginal infections without antibiotics

NCT ID NCT07527572

First seen May 01, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether taking a daily probiotic pill containing a specific friendly bacteria (Lactobacillus gasseri) can prevent bacterial vaginosis (BV) from returning after standard antibiotic treatment. BV is a common vaginal infection that often comes back, causing discomfort and discharge. The trial will involve 160 women with a history of recurrent BV, who will take either the probiotic or a placebo for six months to see if it reduces the chance of another infection.
