Botox shots before hernia repair may reduce need for major surgery
NCT ID NCT07349628
First seen Jan 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 21 times
Summary
This study looked at 32 people with complex incisional hernias who received Botox injections into their abdominal wall muscles before surgery. The idea was that relaxing the muscles would make it easier to close the hernia without more extensive cutting. Researchers measured how often the hernia could be closed with a standard technique and tracked complications. The results suggest preoperative Botox may help, but the study was small and observational, so more research is needed.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
botulinum toxin A (Botox)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could make complex hernia repairs safer and less invasive by relaxing the abdominal muscles beforehand.
What could go wrong
This is a small observational study with only 32 patients and no control group, so results may not apply to everyone. Botox is temporary and may not help all hernia types.
