Simple blood test may replace colonoscopy for colitis patients
NCT ID NCT06372613
First seen Apr 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 20, 2026 · Updated 11 times
Summary
This study is testing whether a blood test measuring a protein called LRG can tell if the gut lining has healed in people with ulcerative colitis. Researchers will compare blood LRG levels with colonoscopy and tissue samples in 100 patients. If the blood test works, it could offer a less invasive way to monitor the disease.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test to check if ulcerative colitis is in remission, potentially reducing the need for invasive colonoscopies.
What could go wrong
This is an early observational study with only 100 participants, so the results may not apply to all patients. The LRG test may not be accurate enough to replace colonoscopy.
