New scoring system aims to prevent dangerous aspiration during common stomach exams

NCT ID NCT07104214

Summary

This study aims to create a simple scoring system that helps doctors predict which patients may have food or liquid remaining in their stomach before undergoing sedated gastroscopy (a camera examination of the stomach). Researchers will follow 5,000 patients to identify risk factors like diabetes or certain medications that slow stomach emptying. The goal is to prevent dangerous complications where stomach contents could enter the lungs during sedation.
