Prebiotic fiber and exercise may ease inflammation in kidney patients
NCT ID NCT03689569
First seen Apr 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 8 times
Summary
This study looked at whether taking a prebiotic fiber (resistant starch) and doing moderate aerobic exercise for 16 weeks could reduce inflammation and improve blood vessel health, thinking, and mood in people with stage 3-4 chronic kidney disease. 68 patients were randomly assigned to receive the prebiotic or a placebo, with some also exercising. The goal was to see if these lifestyle changes could help manage the disease before dialysis is needed.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
resistant starch (a type of prebiotic fiber)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, non-drug way to manage inflammation and slow kidney disease progression.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 68 participants. Results may not apply to everyone, and the benefits of prebiotics and exercise may be modest or hard to separate from other factors.
