New system aims to keep people with mental illness out of jail, back in treatment

NCT ID NCT03740139

Summary

This study tested whether a new police-mental health connection system could help reduce unnecessary arrests and keep people in treatment. When police ran a background check during an encounter, half of the 1,405 participants triggered a message alerting the officer to call a mental health specialist for advice. Researchers measured if this led to fewer arrests and fewer gaps in mental health care over two years.
