Hawaiian superfood poi tested to ward off pregnancy diabetes

NCT ID NCT07446205

First seen Mar 21, 2026 · Last updated Jun 14, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This pilot study is testing whether eating fermented poi every day can improve the balance of good bacteria in the body and lower the risk of gestational diabetes in pregnant women. Fifty pregnant women between 10 and 24 weeks will eat one pound of poi daily for four weeks and receive nutrition tips by text. Researchers will compare their results to similar women who did not eat poi to see if this traditional Hawaiian food helps prevent diabetes during pregnancy.
