Picture this: a simple icon could save newborns from medical errors

NCT ID NCT03960099

First seen Mar 25, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study tests whether showing a unique pictograph (a simple icon like a rainbow or lion) for each baby in the NICU can reduce mistakes where doctors order treatments for the wrong infant. About 6,250 newborns and their clinicians at three hospitals will take part. Half the clinicians will see the pictographs in the electronic health record; the other half will not. The goal is to see if pictographs lower the rate of wrong-patient orders.
