Laser gum therapy may help heart attack survivors
NCT ID NCT04145557
First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 27 times
Summary
This study looked at whether using a 980nm diode laser along with standard deep cleaning can improve gum health and reduce body-wide inflammation in people with gum disease, including those who had a heart attack in the last 6 months. About 80 participants under 70 years old were divided into groups based on their heart and gum health. The laser was applied to the gum pockets in some patients, and researchers measured gum pocket depth, bleeding, and blood markers of inflammation before treatment, at 2 weeks, and at 3 months after. The goal was to see if the laser provides extra benefit beyond standard cleaning alone.
