Dental crown removal may boost implant cleaning success
NCT ID NCT07391202
First seen Feb 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 15 times
Summary
This study tests whether temporarily removing the prosthetic crown before non-surgical cleaning improves treatment for peri-implantitis, a gum infection around dental implants. Thirty-six adults with at least one affected implant will be randomly assigned to cleaning with or without crown removal. Researchers will measure gum pocket depth, bleeding, and bone levels over 12 months to see which approach works better.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Non-surgical mechanical debridement (cleaning) with or without temporary crown removal
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that removing the crown before cleaning leads to better gum health around dental implants, potentially improving treatment outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 36 participants. The results may not apply to all patients, and the benefit of crown removal might be minimal or not last long-term.
