Chemo-Free combo for lymphoma shows promise in early trial
NCT ID NCT04268277
First seen Feb 28, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 13 times
Summary
This phase 2 trial tested a combination of two drugs, pembrolizumab (Keytruda) and rituximab (Truxima), in 22 people with marginal zone lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. The goal was to see if this chemotherapy-free approach could control the disease with fewer side effects than standard chemo. The study was terminated early, so the full results are not yet clear.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Pembrolizumab (Keytruda) and Rituximab (Truxima)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a chemotherapy-free treatment option for marginal zone lymphoma, potentially reducing side effects while controlling the disease.
What could go wrong
The trial was terminated early with only 22 participants, so results are limited. It is a small phase 2 study, and the combination may not be as effective as standard chemo or could cause unexpected side effects.
