Promising combo shows survival edge in kidney cancer

NCT ID NCT02853331

First seen Feb 02, 2026 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 14 times

Summary

This study tested whether combining two drugs—pembrolizumab (an immunotherapy) and axitinib (a targeted therapy)—works better than the standard drug sunitinib alone for people with advanced kidney cancer. Over 860 participants received either the combination or sunitinib as their first treatment. The goal was to see if the combo could slow cancer growth and help people live longer. Results showed the combination improved both progression-free and overall survival.
