New vaccine timing could slash hidden pneumonia germs in malawi kids

NCT ID NCT04078997

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 33 times

Summary

This study looked at whether changing the timing of a pneumonia vaccine (PCV13) from three doses without a booster to two doses plus a booster can better reduce the bacteria that cause pneumonia and meningitis in children. Over 3,500 children and adults in Blantyre, Malawi, took part. Researchers measured how many people carried the bacteria in their nose to see if the new schedule provides stronger community protection.
