Could a simple MRI tell which pancreatic cysts are cancer?
NCT ID NCT05873699
First seen Jan 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 19, 2026 · Updated 17 times
Summary
This pilot study tests a new MRI technique using a special dye called hyperpolarized 13-C-pyruvate to better see inside pancreatic cysts. The goal is to tell harmless cysts from those that could turn into cancer. Twenty adults with pancreatic cysts who are already scheduled for surgery will receive the dye injection before their MRI. The study focuses on safety and whether the scan can correctly identify high-risk cysts.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Hyperpolarized 13-C-pyruvate
What this could lead to
If successful, this imaging method could help doctors accurately identify which pancreatic cysts are dangerous, reducing unnecessary surgeries and catching cancer early.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase pilot study with only 20 people. The technique is experimental and may not reliably distinguish cyst types, and there could be side effects from the injected substance.
Conditions
