Scientists test two common drugs to ease debilitating spinal cord pain

NCT ID NCT02218203

Summary

This study tested whether combining two existing medications—dextromethorphan (taken by mouth) and lidocaine (given by IV)—could better reduce chronic nerve pain in people with spinal cord injuries. Twenty-six adults with this type of pain tried different dose combinations to find the most effective mix with the fewest side effects. The goal was to find a better way to manage this difficult-to-treat pain, not to cure the underlying injury.
