New study aims to cut opioid use in gallbladder surgery with targeted nerve blocks
NCT ID NCT07595679
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will observe 80 adults having gallbladder surgery to compare two types of nerve blocks for pain control. One block targets the abdomen wall (M-TAPA), the other targets muscles between the ribs (external oblique intercostal). A skin sensor will guide how much opioid painkiller is needed during surgery. The goal is to see which block reduces opioid use more effectively.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- nerve block (M-TAPA or external oblique intercostal plane block)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help doctors choose the best nerve block to reduce opioid use during gallbladder surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small observational study, not a randomized trial. Results may not apply to all patients or surgeries.
