New combo therapy aims to save rectums from radical surgery

Summary
This study tests two radiation approaches (short-course or long-course) followed by chemotherapy to shrink low rectal tumors. The goal is to achieve a complete response so patients can avoid major surgery and keep their rectum. About 66 adults with stage 2-4a rectal cancer will participate, and doctors will track how many avoid surgery for at least one year.
