New study aims to tell if mastitis really needs antibiotics

NCT ID NCT05794945

First seen Mar 23, 2026 · Last updated Apr 30, 2026 · Updated 6 times

Summary

This study follows 300 breastfeeding women to learn why some develop mastitis (breast inflammation) and whether it is caused by bacteria or just inflammation. Researchers will compare milk and skin samples from mothers with and without mastitis, and track symptoms over time. The goal is to create better guidelines so that antibiotics are only used when truly needed.
