AI alert system aims to stop opioid overdoses before they happen

NCT ID NCT06810076

First seen Apr 30, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study looks at a new computer tool that helps doctors know which patients are at high risk for an opioid overdose. The tool works inside the hospital's electronic health record system and sends an alert when a doctor prescribes an opioid. Researchers are checking if the tool leads to more safe practices, like prescribing the overdose-reversal drug naloxone, and if doctors find the tool helpful and easy to use. About 674 patients and their doctors at UF Health clinics in Florida are taking part.
