Sinus surgery without opioids: can dexmedetomidine do the job?
NCT ID NCT07812389
First seen Sep 10, 2026 · Last updated Sep 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Researchers are studying whether skipping opioids during functional endoscopic sinus surgery leads to better recovery. The trial follows 104 adults with chronic sinusitis who receive anesthesia with dexmedetomidine and other non-opioid pain relievers instead of standard opioid drugs. Surgeons will rate the surgical field and their satisfaction, while researchers track pain, nausea, and how quickly patients recover.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- dexmedetomidine, a sedative and pain-relieving drug used instead of opioids during anesthesia
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this approach could give sinus surgery patients a recovery with less nausea, less vomiting, and less need for opioid painkillers.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a randomized experiment, so it cannot prove cause and effect. Results may not apply to patients with heart conditions or those outside the age range studied.

Who is studied
Adult male and female patients aged 18 to 65 years who are scheduled to undergo elective Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) due to chronic sinusitis at Ankara Bilkent City Hospital, a tertiary care referral and teaching hospital in Ankara, Turkey. The study population comprises consecutive eligible patients whose perioperative anesthetic and surgical management is monitored following institutional Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathways.
