Coconut oil vs. mouthwash: a natural rival for healthier gums?
NCT ID NCT07769112
First seen Aug 17, 2026 · Last updated Aug 18, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether rinsing with coconut oil can reduce plaque and gum inflammation as effectively as a standard chlorhexidine mouthwash. Eighty adults with plaque-induced gingivitis will be split into two groups: one using coconut oil daily and the other using chlorhexidine twice a day for 21 days. Researchers will measure plaque and gum health at several points to see if the natural approach offers comparable benefits with fewer side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- coconut oil pulling and chlorhexidine mouthwash (0.12%)
- What this could lead to
- If coconut oil pulling works as well as chlorhexidine, it could offer a natural, gentler option for managing gum inflammation with fewer side effects.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, short-term trial, and results may not apply broadly. Coconut oil may be less effective than chlorhexidine, and the study does not assess long-term outcomes.
