Breathing machine may prevent lung crisis in sickle cell kids

NCT ID NCT01501643

First seen Feb 15, 2026 · Last updated May 01, 2026 · Updated 10 times

Summary

This study looked at whether a breathing machine (non-invasive ventilation) could prevent acute chest syndrome, a severe lung complication, in children with sickle cell disease who are in a pain crisis and need strong pain medicine. The machine helps the child breathe without effort, unlike standard deep-breathing exercises that can be hard when in pain or asleep. The study planned to compare the two methods in children aged 6 to 20, but was stopped early with only 6 participants enrolled.
