New light test may improve healing predictions for amputees

NCT ID NCT02551484

First seen Feb 14, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 7 times

Summary

This study tested whether a device called NIRS, which uses light to measure oxygen in tissues, can better predict wound healing and blood flow in people who had a leg amputation due to poor circulation. Researchers compared NIRS to the standard method (TcPO2) in 62 patients. The goal was to see if NIRS gives more reliable readings and helps doctors decide when the stump is ready for a prosthetic limb.
