Could a common vitamin help fight sepsis? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07655791

First seen Jun 22, 2026 · Last updated Jun 23, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This Phase 4 trial tests whether adding nicotinamide (vitamin B3) to standard sepsis care can reduce organ failure and inflammation in ICU patients. Researchers will give 60 adults with sepsis either nicotinamide or a placebo for 7 days, measuring changes in organ function and blood markers. The goal is to see if this safe, inexpensive vitamin can improve outcomes in a life-threatening condition.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Nicotinamide (vitamin B3) 1000 mg oral tablet

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, safe, and cheap vitamin supplement to help control sepsis and reduce organ failure in the ICU.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 patients, so results may not apply broadly. Nicotinamide at high doses can cause side effects like diarrhea or stomach upset.
