New scan could spare elderly from unnecessary steroid side effects

NCT ID NCT07010484

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 24, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study aims to improve how doctors diagnose polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), a painful inflammatory condition common in older adults. Current methods often lead to unnecessary treatment with steroids, which have serious side effects. Researchers will use a new PET/MRI scan in 149 people suspected of having PMR to see if it can more accurately identify the disease and guide treatment decisions.
