New combo therapy may let some rectal cancer patients skip surgery

Summary
This study is for people with newly diagnosed, high-risk rectal cancer. It tests a treatment plan given before surgery that includes a short course of radiation, followed by a mix of chemotherapy and immunotherapy drugs. The goal is to shrink or eliminate the tumor, and for those who respond completely, surgery may be avoided in favor of close monitoring. The study is currently recruiting 49 participants.
