Simple nerve stretches may boost balance and strength in seniors
NCT ID NCT07515144
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a gentle physiotherapy technique called neural mobilization, combined with standard exercises, can improve balance, ankle strength, and calf muscle size in people aged 60+ with sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss). 52 participants will receive guided nerve stretches and Otago exercises over a set period. The goal is to see if this approach can reduce fall risk and improve mobility.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Neural mobilization (gentle nerve stretches) plus Otago exercises
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a simple, non-drug way to improve balance and reduce fall risk in older adults with sarcopenia.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with only 52 participants, so results may not apply widely. The intervention is safe but may not produce significant improvements.

Inclusion Criteria Participants of both genders aged 60 years and above are included. A Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 24-30 is required, indicating normal to mild cognitive function. Sarcopenia is diagnosed according to the criteria established by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP). Exclusion Criteria Individuals with neurological disorders are excluded. Individuals with severe musculoskeletal impairments that restrict ankle movement or prevent safe participation in stretching exercises are excluded. Participants currently undergoing other physical therapy interventions are excluded. Individuals using medications that significantly affect balance, muscle strength, or central nervous system function are excluded. Individuals with a recent history of lower limb surgery or trauma are excluded.
