Shoulder surgery patients feel better with nerve block, small study finds

NCT ID NCT05499897

First seen Apr 03, 2026 · Last updated May 25, 2026 · Updated 8 times

Summary

This study tested whether a nerve block (interscalene brachial plexus block) given before open shoulder surgery could improve early recovery. 34 adults having rotator cuff repair were randomly assigned to receive either the nerve block plus general anesthesia or general anesthesia alone. The researchers measured wound symptoms, pain, and blood markers of inflammation. Results suggest the nerve block may reduce wound-related discomfort and alter the body's healing response in the first days after surgery.
