Neck surgery patients may need fewer opioids with simple nerve block

NCT ID NCT06570577

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 24, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a nerve block called an inter-semispinalis plane block can help people use fewer opioid painkillers after posterior cervical spine surgery. About 60 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the nerve block plus standard pain medication or standard medication alone. The goal is to see if the nerve block lowers opioid use, reduces pain scores, and shortens hospital stays.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Inter-semispinalis plane block (ISP nerve block)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a way to reduce opioid use and improve pain control after neck surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 60 people. The nerve block may not reduce pain or opioid use significantly, and there are risks like infection or nerve damage.
